why is feb the busiest time of the year?? Ananya gets over n we have the ghost of projects/assignments/comapny visits et al on our heads. Accompanied by Youth Activism Day, V-Day,how much ever i try not to hate the day, i jus keep failing miserably( this time i'd gone 4 d antakshari comptn at UNIFY in which we lost :X), Japanese delegation (why, oh why?) and MCQs and a host of other menaces.
Youth activism day n V-day~ordeal was over in relative quick succesion. Japanese delegation(Students from The Obirin University,Japan) arrives on Monday, we are informed on Friday or so and i'm clueless as to how we are gonna "interact" with them. Profs in charge do not know whether the students understand english or not or whther they are undergrads like us.The profs tell us its an "informal" session which we are gonna fill up wid ppt presentations about India and its great diverse culture,religion blah blah. They do not want any of the topics (or pictures mainly) assigned to overlap but the topics given are culture of India, Religions of india, Monuments in India, Traditions in india and god-knows-wht-not in inida. Only pics 2 b ther in the ppt, n no pointer texts. But then we have to show all that we are gonna "read out or say" during the ppt! The 1st day we have sum female frm sum NGO come n giv us a ppt abt "women's issues and concerns in india"-womens movement and stuff, the stats quoted in which would make u question ur own logical statistical aptitude n the general sanity of the presenter and you would be left with the question "why are we telling our woes to those Japs? why dont we let them sleep in peace?" (quite a few of them were just here to sleep). Two whole days of "interaction" which included about 10 presenations frm our side n some lines exchanged that bore some semblance to personal interaction. The second day was much better than the first, we had figured out names of atleast 5 japanese students by then. It was a nice n different experience, i guess,but cant stop whining about it nevertheless.
There was the OB(call it outstanding bullshit- its just english in reality) test on stress after it, in which all i could think was " i'm stressed ". Then i wake up to reality one fine day before today and realise that i have to submit my Business English and Costing projects on Saturday and Monday and that i havnt even started working on either. I have managed to buy notes and MCQs but i'd just shock myself if i ever use them anytime hours befor ethe exams.
I thought i'd play it smart Business Eng n use the report on Academic Summit which Vibhav n Me had written n i'd manipulate the findings and all that. Turns out the report is no longer on my laptop or with anyone with whom i'd thought it would be. As for the Acc. project- all i hav wid me is the letter from college. all in all, i've been ranting on about how busy it is these days, but havnt been doing all that much to resolve the problems on hand. Tomorrow i hav 2 submit my Business Eng project n there's way too much to do, but i sit here blogging, writing an extra long post after reading which i hope the owners wont ban me on this blog.

Ha. In an attempt to stop rampant Copy-Pasting on our SY projects, our teachers decided that every company must give a letter of certification that you have, in fact, visited them.

Fair enough rule. But in a desperate last minute move, I stuck letters from some random manufacturing companies in my project about BPOs. Guess what? No one noticed.

Well, the Alphabet of Symbiosis is on a deadline.

Today. (typical, eh?).

Some 10-15 TYs have been working on it overnight (yeah, we started yesterday). Wish us all luck!

so many vivas these days, i wanna shout out '"WHY"va'?? n judging by that PJ, you can probably tell as 2 how bad it's gettin'.. :p confession time- i haven't been to one company so far in any of these so called field trip entailing projects.. yet to get less than an 8 in any of 'em.. hehe.. it's fun screwin' wit d faculty..

confession time again- i'm bored n i have nothin' 2 do.. i'm guessin' dat was obvious enough tho.. :p

lol, i can relate 2 dat.. kriti, milind n me went 2 wadia's cult. fest this past friday alongwith 3 other teams from symbi for their Dumb C event .. or at least what we thought was their Dumb C event.. we reach there a half an hour later than the scheduled time n find out that it really doesn't matter coz the events runnin a 'lil' late.. for what reason, u ask? bcoz one of the genius coordinators forgot to print out the movie chits.. so they're printing the movies out n tearing the A-4 sheets into lil chits n us 4 symbi teams r waiting amongst 23 others in this classroom which is arguably only slightly bigger than dr. B's office..

the event finally starts, 3 hours late i might add!! they start with the rules for the elims:
Rule 1- 3 rounds: One movie, one song, one book, all english.. Fair Enough..
Rule 2- One minute 2 act!!!??
Rule 3- All 3 members in the team have 2 act!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i mean wtf is dat?? anyways, they start off wit movies like titanic, happy feet & dirty dancing.. Rule 2 explains itself right there.. but the fuckin' huge disparity between some chits was baffling.. one guy got 'one flew over the cuckoo's nest', the next guy got 'M'.. i kid you not! 'M'??? we get tougher movies for our rapid fire rounds for christ's sake.. but rule 3 was the real bitch! just didn't see it coming..

needless to say, for those who kno me at least, my team didn't qualify.. :p missed by 3 seconds.. but fuck it, right? shit happens.. anyways, the best was yet 2 come.. the 3 other symbians qualified in d top 6 n hence, the finals.. so hopes of a Symbi sweep were definitely still alive... the 3 being the ananya Dumb C champs, the Conoscenza Dumb C champs, n the ananya Dumb C organisers.. lol, piece of cake right, wot wit happy feet n all?

not so.. coz the final rounds didn't entail acting in the least.. there was a pictionary round, a round with a slight variation on '20 questions' n d 'surprise' round with hindi movies.. LOL! the best finish among them was 3rd.. n there were no prizes for that.. not even a measly certificate.. n even the lame-ass team which won, a lame-ass team that couldn't get 'wag the tail' by the way, got only 4500 bucks of the 7500 that them wadia ppl had advertised was the 1st prize.. some sponsorship trouble.. can u beat that??

now all dis i can deal wit.. what i cannot deal wit is the fact that i lost a whole day's attendance for this.. no reimbursements either.. coz apparently, i wasn't representing the college, it was a personal co-curricular.. the fact that i got 2 see the less crowded 1:30 show for Black Friday notwithstanding, it pissed me off coz dat's another 6 lectures closer 2 a TNG.. :(

but then again...

is it just me? or is any rule that makes a student think twice about taking part in extra-curriculars, a rule not worth following??

AFMC - Another Frustratingly Dimwitted Competition

Just a quick rant. :)

The title is justified. Seriously. I expected more from AMFC - the creme de la creme of medical colleges that they are.

The 4 of us (Me and Kanika, Yudi and Daanish) had gone for the debate competition at their annual fest - tantalizingly titled Silhouettes 2007 - and promoted with pamphlets featuring outlines of slim women (just in case we didnt get it)

The debate event starts an hour and a half late - unforgivable even by Symbiosis standards, given the fact that they had in-house judges for the event.

Teams got topics on the spot, and the judges randomly chose who would speak For and who would speak Against the motion. We got 2 minutes to think, and a further 2 minutes to state our case.

teams got topics like 'I Can Beat Sania Mirza' and 'Wednesdays Should be Holidays' - and, judging from the results, humour and theatrics took front stage over content and poise.

This wasnt a Debate. It seemed more like a cleverly disguised Extempore Competition.

also, i haven't seen even one of the other oscar noms in the foreign language category yet, (watchin pan's labyrinth 2day), but i hope 2 god water wins.. it might not be d greatest film ever made, not even close actually (one song 2 many ppl!!), but like it came up wit krish n vipul d other day, it'll be the biggest "F*** U!" 2 a certain Mr. BT n every other intolerant jackass.. let them movies release already.. "you can kill the movie, not the idea"- or somethin' 2 dat effect.. :D

YOUTH ACTIVISM DAY.

It was a bustling active day today. It felt like we were in middle of another Ananya. It was good to see so many people coming up to participate, standing up for some cause, showing support. Above all, was the fact there are people in our college who are bothered about social issues and are willing to take them up. I was surprised at myself working hard for it and not being indifferent as I always pretend to be. :P . It was good to see so many people wearing our STOP CHILD ABUSE badges ( its a different matter altogether that we forced quite a few to put them on :O)

We missed the screening of Hotel Rwanda, as we were working on our 11th hour ppt presentation. But we did attend the screening of Water. It was only during the last scenes of the film that I could really like what I was seeing. Well-made movie nonetheless, but its only the last scene showing Seema Biswas carrying the child to the station, that brought our emotions to the fore.( Forgive me owners for giving such a juvenile review)

All in all, it was an amazing experience for us today.

The US needed a poster-boy to justify their invasion of Iraq (after the WMDs refused to show up) and they found it in Mr. Saddam - who chose to run and hide in a little hole while the marines advanced.

Cut to old footage of Saddam gassing the Kurds, harassing the Kuwaitis and getting rich while his country suffered in poverty - and you have an evil dictator put away - condemned to death for his crimes against humanity. The forces of liberty and democracy win again.

That's what the average US citizen sees. And that translates into votes and approval ratings. Both of which Bush desperately needs.

And to quote the movie 'Syriana', the last thing the US wants is peace in the middle east. They don't want a democratic nation setting an example and hoarding all the oil. If Iran rises up in fury against the hanging -great. Just Another 'threat' to world peace that the valiant US of A has to put down.

That said, I agree completely with you. It's just wrong. And with all the other bootlickers on the UN security council fawning over every US move - it'll continue to be wrong.

I salute Hugo Chavez. He had the balls to call Bush the devil. A sentiment, I'm sure, too many of us share.

Apologies for geting political but catharsis is the chef's reccomendation today.

i have one question only - " HAVE THE AMERICANS FLIPPED THEIR LID???"

So they decided to hang Saddam. GREAT! Remember all the people the Brits hung?? Bhagat Singh et all?? Now don't get me wrong...the iraqi scum deserved the harshest of punishments...but WHY chose to hang him - capital punishment at its worst!! it just gives him a martyr spin...especially when the big buly of the world acts as the hangman. What adds fuel to fire is the way they televise the whole issue! The only thing left was for the man to wear a bright green jersey sponsored by Mc donald's, i'm loving it! (McSaddam anyone??)

And can anything be worse than their impecabble timing. As they gear up for their festivities, the americans deliver another blow to the muslim world. have they not learnt anything from 9/11??

All of which leads me to wonder...WHO THE HELL IS ADVISING THE GOVT??? Do they have a bunch of dimwits high on coke(of the fluid kind) in the whitehouse?? Do they require another kick in the rear so they can understand the subtleties of being POLITICALLY correct??!!??

Sigh.. ok ok, Yudi, you win, I'm here (shakes dust off keyboard, and brain)..! How fareth everyone? What's going down? Hows the holidays treating you guys? I've been.. Well, lets just say I'm still in shellshock from the endsems! Ok, so I've bin watching too many japanese cartoons (Naruto, its awesome, believe it!) , playing kickass games on me ps2 (FFXII, God of War, ya with me, Ismail?!), reading like crazy (I've finally got hold of 'Dune', Krish! yay!) n making pilgrimages to Mocha (if you know where I live, you'll understand!). Isn't that what the holidays are all about? I've slipped so comfortably into this groove, and yet, I went to IMS today, n got like 500 test papers to solve. So, yeah. Time to crashland back to reality. Problem is, I can't find the right switch.. I don't wanna prepare for the CAT, and I don't wanna be held accountable for my results! But then, I guess I'll just wait for a Simcat eh.. its always 'motivating' to know just how much you don't!

Hmm, college starts in a few days. You guys senti about it being the last sem? Well, we can go ahead counting our last Xs and our first Ys, but I just eyeballed the SIBM prospectus and sighed to myself.. its not over yet, is it?!

That's right. The weather has gone completely crazy! It's raining like crazy here in Chennai, and it's still HOT in Pune (except when it decides to rain arbitrarily).

Apart from that, though - Everything's A-ok here. Everyone's off home, enjoying the festival of exploding things.

AS for the inactivity, I DID spread the word about the blog to a few juniors. And no one posted anything.

We need stricter rules around here, methinks. Let's see. What can make a BBA student REALLY do something with utmost sincerity?

A question easily answered.
Tie-ups with attendance...and maybe an internal backlog or two will bring our fellow bloggers running to post.

Anyways ..college is preparing for Halloween..and i m preparing myself to spend hours in the college kitchen..i have to practice molten lava cakes for festive food project, Authentic chinese food(4 dishes..and theres no noodles!!!) for international day(me n my team of 4 have to make the same for 750-800 people on the day of..) and a couple of different types of food for a Demo Presentation in class....

Dunno if that statement holds fort on it's own but it's not all bullcrap.. i mean, to complain about something is one thing, to bitch about it in a forum full of people who either, a)Don't care OR b)can't do anything about it anyways, is a whole another thing.. dat's just playing the class clown, the village idiot, the court jester, the "entertainment piece" for the day basically.. but hey, if you're genuinely concerned about somethin n u "complain" about it 2 d right people or in a way that the right people listen, there shouldn't be much room for complaint there.. the right people in this case being certain *cough* library reps *cough*.. :D [hint,hint,wink,wink] hehe.. the way i see it, if it affects u, n u have a problem with it, u'll make sure somethin makes it better yourself..

so as far as the orkut goes, it's a perfect example of a teenage sewing club.. LOL.. you've got your wannabes, your people who'll say n back anythin to get attention, you've got ur rabble rousers n you've got the other 300 somethin people who joined coz of peer pressure.. LOL!! so until someone who's got some authority listens in, i don't see things gettin better..

it's definitely not a cohesive thing n there r better ways to "unite" the 3 batches as it were.. if it needs any uniting in the first place that is.. hehe, coz i don't see how we aren't united enough already.. we've been winnin accolades all over the place with all 3 baches participatin 2 prove that..we're doin fine 2 say the least.. but in all seriousness, what worries me isn't the complaining.. it's the sheer volume n diversity of the complaints!! what is that about??

'I think cribbing on this community is very healthy for a number of reasons.. No unity in our college... with students of every batch segregated on different floors, this platforms for complaining & bitching is doing wonders... atleast people now know what our common problems are...so go on..Complain. I wonder how many of us actually go & talk to people-in-charge, based on their individual opinion feel..'ho raha hai hone do' attitude takes us nowhere. I cant be thankful to Symbi for most things it has given, because we were promised much more than what we have. And evrytime there is a minor addition, like LCD's, they make such a fanfare as if they have brought about a revoution in the field of education. I'm impressed with the Fy's who have already started signature campaigns & mass-bunking to get rid of teachers... great going, just dont overdo it.
Its quite normal to wake up around exam time & look for books because the amount of cramming we are subjected to, we wud probably retain only a quarter of it if V study from day one :-) Ironically, refrence books are the ones v need to issue...Symbi needs less of people with attitude(read Tutakne, Subrato, Thakkar) and more of Ganesh's, Sharmishtha's and Soods.

Another reason why asking ATM cards and Cell phones is not acceptable to me is because its their fault if v haven't been issued I-cards.... & its not as if they dont know most of us on a name-face basis... Just let us write our name on the damn register & get in... Sum1 pls tell me, I-card or Cell phone or watevr, if sum1 has to flick a mag or book, and walk out coolly, how will it stop them?? Its like that..that..red-tapeism !'

Well, yes...it does go a bit overboard sometimes, but the basic point of 'Complain, and things will get better' got me thinking.

No, not really. Observational humour is a combination of wither a deviance, or a cross-connection.

The Chris Rock joke is a cross-connection, with a bit of peak shift.
Murphy's laws become cross connections when you put them together in your head.

this is when ppl point out stuff which is out in the open, there for everyone 2 see.. n it's not even funny till someone points it out.. this sorta humour results in the "oh dat's happened to me 2" or "oh it's such an obvious joke" laughter.. jerry seinfeld, south park, murphy's laws.. they all thrive on this principle..

Mirror, Mirror, Who's the Winner?

Please excuse the title. It's not MY attempt at humour, but someone else's. After Navras, I've come to the conclusion that laughter is no judge of humour. Sometimes, we're compelled to laugh, either by socio-political insistence or momentary lapses of reason. Laughter also replicates like single cell organisms, and sometimes 'spills over' into subsequent attempts at humour. It's sometimes polite, sometimes sarcastic. Not, therefore, a good judge of the humour itself.

So, that brings us to an interesting question. Is an attempt even possible at...rating humour? I'm not talking of a classification that graduate students will find themselves mugging up in 20 years from now, but rather an attempt to quantify a set of processes that makes us go 'ha-ha' at a joke or a comic situation.

I thought a bit, and here, ladies and gentlemen, is my crude attempt at classifying the causes of humour:

1. Deviance.
This was a tough word to pick I needed something that would explain why we laugh at stand up comedy, or Mr. Bean, or even a System of a Down Song.

I settled for deviance, as it very efficiently covers every kind of unnaturality. Anything out of the ordinary is deviant, and most humour IS something out of the ordinary. I could even subclassify deviance into 'Peak Shifts' - involving exaggeration, and 'Tangent Shifts' - involving general weirdness.

2. Cross Connections.
Another tough word to pick. I took inspiration from the dozens of insanely bizzare cross-connections my BSNL landline has provided me over the years. Cross Connections are relating two or more seemingly non-connected themes into one. They may involve a hint of deviance, but I'm guessing that a pure cross-connection is also possible.

Let me take an example. A satire, or a parody is a cross-connection. When an image of...say, George Bush is superimposed on a movie poster. or someone's face morphed with a famous celebrity's - that's a cross connection.

Okay, admitted. These are not really the 'causes' of humour, but rather the factors that influence the degree of whatever neural process that triggers humour.

It's a time of frantic running-around and frenzied Did-I-fill-my-form-right moments.

CAT is upon us, and those imagining a large feline looming over the horizon are, like me, not contemplating a future in management education.

Which leaves us where? Having done a BBA - Science is now out of the question - leaving the fields of Mass Media, Management and Theoretical Arts open to us. Mass Media constitutes Journalism and Mass Comm, and Arts includes MAs and PHDs in Philosophy, Economics, Sociology and Indian History.

Yes, it is indeed a tough decision for us non-MBA folk. Not a problem of plenty, but a lack thereof.

I, for one, don't wish to enter the extremely competitive world of broadcast journalism, and the academic one-sightedness of a PhD is still a concept I'm trying to come to terms with.

Oh, well. There's still about 8 months left. Maybe something will materialize itself.

hey i've got an idea for how we can publicise d world cup in coll.. we can do wot me n some ppl did in school durin euro 2004.. let's start a world cup pot!! the rules r simple.. all participants start off wit a fictitious 100 bucks.. u can bet these 100 bucks on any team/teams in any denomination.. the object being to win the most money after the finals.. if ur team wins the quarters, the money u bet on it is doubled, tripled in the semis and the amount u bet on the winner is 10toupled.. u have to bet before the start of the round of 16 vis-a-vis the 24th of june.. obviously there are loopholes which i welcome any1 to point out.. the rules are flexible.. we can work on it.. it's fun n easy enough to play.. Word of Caution: it's not all that easy 2 predict d winner!! no one in my school bet on greece n no one got past 500 bucks at the end.. but then again, u don't actually have 2 bet on the winner to win.. lemme kno!!

THis is one of the images on top of the page in the BBA website. Now I don't claim to be an expert, but I'm pretty good when it comes to spotting symbolism and this one totally bewildered me. What is it supposed to signify? And if you look closely at the background, you can make out a fuzzy navel, and an expanse of what seems to be a woman's hip portion (or a guy's flab). wtf?

so here we are at the end of another holiday...and at the beginning of another (hopefully) eventful year.

if anyone has seen the new list of BBA brats they will realise an abundance of the XY chromosome...this is sad news for both the sexes. the men have no new eye candy (unless gay)... and since the incoming males are at the top of the list, we can safely assume that they are nerds...which rules out the possibility of good looks...so sorry ladies, we are still ur best bet!!!

I'm currently listening to Noam Chomsky. No, he doesn't sing, and god forbid if he attempts to. But he speaks pretty damn well, and one of his documentaries might be LCF material (if I ever feel like boring people to tears).

I'm preparing a set of 'educational' (a suspect word) presentations for next semester's LCF screenings. I felt a bit of movie knowledge wouldnt hurt, and, of course, the fact that it's 'educational' will help me get some leverage in terms of creative freedom with the screenings.

We're getting a basketball court, a volleyball place, and our library has new furniture and there's glass all around...

hey krish , i went for the Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra performance last night !! It was awesome ...They played the 'Romeo and Juliet Overture' by Tchaikovsky and some Mozart !

Me cheering for England ( even though Rooney's not there .. there's always Beckham to look at ;) !! ) and Brazil of course ...

umm , and Yudi , are classes for second years also commencing from 5th as announced before ??? just confirm plz .

alright 1st things 1st.. can ppl pls stop posting about how they went snorkelling.. not that i have anythin against it, but it's just a very in-your-face reminder about the fact that i don't kno how 2 swim... :-( which is weird seein' as to how i hail from kerala...

am startin my internship 2morro.. let's see how that works out.. n about the newsletter cover page, it looks awesome n' all but krish, u sure it's gonna come out as good on paper?? coz it's not exactly executive bond paper you're workin wit.. anyways, it's ur call.. waitin 4 d da vinci code 2 release now.. although the adaptation of the year should be johnny depp's shantaram.. can't wait for that one..

well, england did have a fair chance at the world cup but now that rooney's gone, it's pretty much done and dusted as far as they're concerned.. as always, i'm goin for netherlands.. they rock!!! but before the world cup, there's another soccer extravaganza comin up.. the champion's league final baby!!! May 17th- Barcelona vs. Arsenal.. or rather, Ronaldinho vs. Henry.. tis up2 those 2 to win it now..

aaaaaaaah the holidays....i am loving it!!!!

top 5 reasons why i love Sri lanka:
1 the chickens are all healthy and ready to eat!!!!
2 the people are butt ugly so i feel good!!!
3 hawaian shirts and shorts are accepted dress codes
4 The beach here is awesome...and the foreigners on it too ;P
5 people are not well versed with english...so u can get away with murder!!!!

anyway the holidays are rocking and so is my internship...really like the new cover krish though it would be nice to make it a lil more colourful!!

here's some food for thought...the word "testimony" originated because the roman soldiers were made to hold their testicles while taking an oath!!! crazy huh??!!??

I knew it. I was watching this awesome spanish movie last night, and I had this sinking feeling that I've somehow seen it before. It took me a while, but then I slowly and painfully remembered it. I've stumbled upon the movie that the glamourous and much hyped 'Bluffmaster' is conceptually (and sometimes literally) ripped off from. It's called Nueve Reinas (Nine Queens), and its about these con men who try to sell counterfeit stamps to a collector for millions. So, this post is about an Indian con man director who tried to sell a counterfeit movie to the public, for millions!

2 Hours spent locating a dingy Corporation office in the middle of nowhere.

1 hour spent explaining to a government orderly that my name was spelt with an 'h'.

A further 30 minutes spent explaining to the same orderly the spelling of 'Symbiosis'.

Then, 1 hour spent waiting as bureaucratic red-tapism ran it's course.

But I got it.

My Voter ID Card.

I'm now a complete citizen of India.
